Alkylnaphthalene has seen occasional use as a synthetic lubricant base stock since 1930. Naphthalene with long olefins (4-18 carbons) to give an alkylated naphthalene fluid with excellent thermo-oxidative stability and viscometrics. Lubricant formulators recognized that lubricants based on alkylnaphthalene fluids had excellent oxidative stability.
